Comparison is the thief of joy
Jul 23, 2021How much time and energy do you spend looking at other people’s lives and wishing that you had what they had?
It doesn’t feel very good, does it?
Here’s the thing – our brain’s are WIRED to compare. And the more we fall into the trap that believing that everyone else has a better life than we do…
The worse we feel.
Our brain is just trying to motivate us to make up the gap. So that we won’t be kicked out of the tribe. Evolutionary, it was a matter of survival.
And you know what? Maybe this wiring worked when we were cave men/women. We recognized our short comings once a day and spent our days making up for it.
But in today’s world we are inundated non-stop with how we aren’t good enough – how everyone else has it better than us.
You see everyone posting all their good news on Instagram. But you have no idea what their struggles are. What is going on behind closed doors.
And our brain takes all of this as 100 percent truth – if we don’t have the awareness to question it.
SO HERE’S YOUR REMINDER – EVERY SINGLE HUMAN IS HAVING A HUMAN LIFE.
A human life means managing 50 percent positive and 50 percent negative emotions. People may be in a different phase of life than you, but their life isn’t better or worse.
The way to feel better – focus on YOU. You are amazing, worthy, and perfect just the way you are. You are also a work in progress, because being a human with a fulfilling life means that you open up to the possibilities of new growth, new learning, and new versions of yourself.
But that doesn’t mean you have to hate the version of yourself that is you right now.
Next time you start comparing, notice what your brain is doing. FEEL the feeling – it feels SHITTY right? Limit your exposure to the constant comparison. Feel it, process it, but come back to how amazing your life is right now.
Someone else’s life doesn’t need to have any impact on how you feel about yours.
But it’s up to you to take control of your brain.
To create awareness of what’s happening when you mindlessly scroll and you leave feeling awful.
What are you thinking? What is your brain giving you?
You always have the ability to come back to yourself.
